Coronavirus: Global number of confirmed cases passes one million

More than a million cases of coronavirus have been registered globally, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University – another grim milestone as the world grapples with the spreading pandemic. The number of coronavirus deaths topped 50,000 around the world

The disease, Covid-19, first emerged in central China three months ago.

The United States reported the highest daily death toll of any country so far at nearly 1,200. It now has more than 6,000 fatalities as the contagion spreads.

Spain reported a record one-day number of deaths, 950, bringing its overall toll to about 10,000. Italy recorded 760 more deaths for a total of 13,900.

Though the tally kept by Johns Hopkins records one million confirmed cases, the actual number is thought to be much higher.

The pandemic is taking a huge economic toll: an extra 6.6 million Americans applied for unemployment benefit last week.
